The Chicago Lighthouse’s free public art display, Lighthouses on the Mag Mile, made its’ debut today in the Windy City. Featuring 51 lighthouses in total – all unique and made by national and local Chicago artists, many with disabilities – the 6-foot sculptures mean to raise awareness and celebration towards people with disabilities. The Chicago Lighthouse organization is known for vision care and support towards the blind, visually impaired, disabled and Veteran communities.
The organization’s lighthouse project – honoring their 30th anniversary year – asks those viewing the art how they can be a part of access and inclusion for those with disabilities. I really enjoyed the cause behind this public event and believe it’s one to be shared. Whether you know someone who is visually impaired or disabled or just want to learn about a great initiative, the Lighthouses on the Mag Mile calls for everyone to get involved and spread the word. Not to mention, the artwork is beautiful and shows true talent. I have only spotted a few – so far – near my work, but hope to seek out the other variations within the coming weeks.
A self-guided tour to hear the artists speak about their work is available by downloading the OTOCAST App – or the AWARE App for those blind and visually impaired. Located all along Michigan Ave., the exact vicinity of each sculpture can be found using Chicago Lighthouse’s Location Map.
