Class of ’07 Review
One of my favorite TV shows new for 2023 has been Class of ’07. Hands down. This comedic, Millennial, female-focused, apocalypse show is available on Prime Video. There are so many great components to the storyline and characters that evolve with each of the eight episodes. Below I have listed the top reasons why you should watch it!
Fresh Storyline
We’ve seen many apocalypse TV shows and movies, but have we seen one about a bunch of girls stuck at their 10 year reunion fighting for survival? Set in Sydney, Australia, the first episode starts with Zoe (Emily Bowen) getting rejected on a Bachelor-style TV show and moving to a rural area to go off the grid. When heavy water starts to flood from the ground, she goes to the highest point around; her old private school where there just so happens to be a reunion with her old classmates going on. After attempting to tell the other girls about the water at no avail, she lets loose and catches up with old friends. Mayhem, however, soon strikes as a a massive flood alienates the school with only deep, endless water surrounding them. The show continues on to show powerful, yet comedic, scenes of survival, distrust, mental health, and female empowerment.
Raw, Realistic Take on Mental Health
One of the main reasons why I liked this show, besides the comedy, was their accurate portrayal of mental health issues and the symptoms that come with it. Specifically their take on depression, bullying, grooming, trauma and self-identity. The group even partakes in a mandatory “emotional self release” hour to keep their slipping sanity. Class of ’07 does a great job at showing the real reality of struggling with a mental illness and the path to manage it in the face of a catastrophic event when medicine and therapists are scarce.
Modern Humor
Class of ’07 had many funny moments that incorporated wittiness, Millennial nostalgia, and dark humor – all of my favorite things. I mean, come on, can we talk about the “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies singing scene? Perfection. The entire soundtrack as a whole is pure early 2000’s gold. We also see humorous moments towards self judgement, token stoners, rivalries, mending friendships, and a fake legal court. You’ll definitely laugh during each episode!
So far, there’s no word on whether Class of ’07 will be canceled or renewed for Season 2.
