The CW’s Charmed follows the lives of three young witches discovering their magical powers while still trying to figure out who they are and their purpose in the world #cantadulttoday. I loved how the show portrayed a young, relatable approach to the witches. One of the sisters, Maggie, is even rushing a sorority! She’s not only discovering sisterhood through biological means, but also through the attempt to live as a normal college girl navigating both Greek life & witch life. Her power to read minds, however, brings along a few roadblocks along the way. Melanie, a strong feminist and Maggie’s older sister, fights for everyday equality while being able to also freeze present time. Her character references a lot of current issues in today’s society, including gender inequality and “he said, she said” hearsay. She’s the loudest one at a protest and believes justice should always be served. The last of the three sisters is Macy. The pilot episode highlights the start of the three’s sisterhood when Macy shows up one evening on their doorstep to tell them that she’s their long lost sister. Being a true scientist, Macy is always trying to make sense of the supernatural through scientific explanation, but when her emotions flare telekinesis takes over.
The main theme of the show, strong together, builds on these sisters needing each other in every way possible. Now that their supernatural powers have been activated, they must beware of evil demons looking to hunt them down. All this plus navigating college life. I think the shows’ ability to keep current with today’s pop culture as well as hot topics will help it stand apart as a must-watch. If you were a witch, what supernatural power would you want to have? Comment below!
